We finally have a good substitute for Cadmium Red, it is a more crimson shade, very pretty, and even behaves better! Unfortunately due to insurance issues and cadmiums being a heavy metal based pigment, we are no longer carrying Cadmiums. Even though it has been sufficiently proven that they are safe in art materials such as paints, and only breathing the pigment powders can be a problem, which is my own personal risk here if any, we are making this concession to political correctness. Do not fear any leftover cadmium paints you have. They are not dangerous, though our insurance company fears someone will think they are and are worried someone may protest or worse. They are, by the way fully legal, and considered safe enough to sell in art stores as gouaches, oil and watercolors.

CARRAGEENAN

Carrageenan is a seaweed extract and is used to make the size bath. This is the instant, "no-cook" variety and can be easily made in a blender. Carrageenan gives a size bath superior to any other in marbling, and was developed for use by the "father" of modern marbling, Josef Halfer at the turn of the century.
Gives the finest lines possible foreither water-based or acrylic marbling. Due to recent large price rise in carrageenan we are having to raise the price, but will now also offer half pound packs for your convenience in case you don't need a whole pound.

ALUM

Alum is a white crystaline powder, which is dissolved in hot water and sponged onto paper before marbling. Fabrics also need to be dipped into an alum solution prior to marbling. Alum is a "mordant", an agent which binds the colors to the item being marbled.

OX-GALL

Ox-gall is the fluid found in the gall bladder of a bovine animal such as an ox or cow. It is used to
disperse the water-based marbling colors, and enables them to float and remain separate from one another on the surface of the size. A little goes a long way.

we are now including for sale the luxurious NATUR TEXT papers in "warm white" (the only current color is off white) . They come in tubes of 25 sheets at $.37.50 plus $9.00 shipping & handling in USA and are 19 X 25 long grain. So luxurious you could sleep on them and they take the paints beautifully. Smoothe finish. They are archival quality and made from cellulose, but feel like rag. A favorite of many book conservators. Ingres is 50 cents more per sheet.

HANDHELD AGATE BURNISHERS

These burnishers fit in the palm of your hand and have an indentation for your thumb! Just glide a bar of paraffin or some beeswax lightly over your papers, just enough to allow the burnisher to glide....not so much that you coat the paper, and rub away to bring up a SHINE! $18.00 plus $5.75 shipping.

ORDERING INFORMATION - MARBLED PAPERS

THE PATTERNS - Basic patterns can be seen in the above samplings. Many variations are possible though. If you have any other ideas or need an early paper duplicated feel free to inquire.

CONSISTENCY - All the sheets are individually hand-marbled, so there are slight differences from sheet to sheet of the same design. This is actually a sign of their authenticity. It is, however, possible to match large amounts of paper very closely for edition runs.

COLORS - Thecolors are ground in the studio. They are formulated to give most traditional look possible. It is best to order papers that need to match closely at the same time, as there may be minor "dye-lot" differences from batch to batch.

PAPER - We have had lots of trouble with papers as more and more of them are getting over-buffered with Calcium carbonate to deacidify them. This substance neutralizes the alum and color runs off the sheets. Out long used paper now, Natur text by Hahnemuelle has unfortunately gone in the same direction and no matter what I try the new lots of papers are repelling the paints. The only one that I can find at a reasonable price is a white Sulphite Drawing paper at 80lb. weight. It is only very slightly heavier, barely noticeable. Unfortunately it only is available in an 18 X 24 sheet. There is still much backstock made up on the old 19 X 25 papers and that will continue to be sold until gone, but all new papers and custom orders for the time being will be 18 X 24. The good news is that prices will not rise, and we were considering a slight raise due to increasing costs. The paper is long grain and holds the color very well. It is not "Acid Free" but what people don't seem to consider, is that the marbling process adds a little acid. Another thing is that people tend to believe paper is either acid and will crumble and deteriorate or it will not. We do trust this paper will last a very long time. The old papers of this sort we used to use have all their brilliance and no sign of deterioration after 31 years. Paper can be easily deacidified by bookbinders and conservators if desired with Wei To spray or running through a milk of magnesia bath, or any other number of ways. Keep in mind even papers marbled successfully on acid free paper will be slightly acidic on the front, marbled side in most cases anyway.

CUSTOM ORDERS - The sheets are made in sets of four, so there is a minimum of four of any custom paper, or in multiples of four (4,8,12,etc.). Allow 2-3 weeks for custom orders, with very large orders possibly taking a bit longer. Custom orders are not exchangeable. Orders may be placed in any quantity. If you wish for sample sheets they will be priced per sheet, S/H charges apply.

STOCK ORDERS - We maintain a large backup stock, always ready for immediate shipment. It is not possible to stock all designs in all color themes, but generally there is something close to what you need on the shelf. There is no minimum for stock orders, and they are exchangeable at any time for any reason as long as they are returned in resaleable condition and the appropriate shipping amount is enclosed for your return order.
